Dave Weckl Live

Dave weckl was at ronnie's all last week as u probably know and lee wrote a cool review but i thought i had to write down what i saw just to get it off my chest.

monday was good, bob franscencini's SECOND GIG with the band and he was reading most of that shit, he did particlularly well concidering. the band seemed particularly relaxed on that nite and it was fun to watch. only first set tho.

same on friday, only stayed for first set and for some reason weckl looked seriously pissed off. at what i have no idea but none of the band mates smiled once, not even tom kennedy (who always smiles!).maybe he bollocked them or something? weckl played very aggressively and beat the shit out of the drums. amazing none the less.

saturday however was fucking off the hook!!! the first set kicked off with wake up and they put a gorgeous swing and latin section int it. next was braziluba which is one of my fav DWB tunes. everyone blew on that and weckl did gorg solo. as lee said, they really funked up "mesmer eyes" and it was great to see weckl layed down some proper funk stuff. all the tunes are extended and played to death. very creative and on the spot.....more than ever before!

the second set was the best i have ever seen the band play, or possibly any band! they were all lauging and similing and having fun! they did the song "just for the record" from transition and tom kennedy blew the roof off! they played it real real slow and then doubled up into swing and back down again. last tune was "the funky chicken", which seems to be their sig tune and that was the most enjoyable tune of the nite.

overall weckl played with such emotion. i personally feel that no one else uses or plays the drums in such a musical and emotional way. he did better chops on monday and friday but on sat he was in the zone. everything was rite on......economy in motion and flowing and powerful and subtle and aggresive and gentle and musical! it was the just an awesome spectical. the way his brain ticks is just beyond belief. the time and space that he sometimes leaves before catching the accents is just so beautifully done. his footwork has improved imensly also.....he was doing single stroke rolls at the end of tunes and doing some killer patterns. then i look down and a lot of the time hes using one foot! everyone says he's using those triplet patterns that he's known for but it sounds so effective and more complex than perhaps it is.

for me, this week solidifies what i originally thought. he is the most musical and expressive drummer i have ever seen (and ive seen a hell of a lot of drummers). he just keeps improving and the band are so much mature now. a year or so ago i could understand them being criticised for being a bit bland or just an example of typical fusion so that weckl can blow, but they all seemed to have mellowed and matured and just relax. its much more of a group effort. all the horn hits that weingart plays and the latin feels.......its just CRAZY!!!!

i feel those exact same feelings but 10x more when i watch vinnie at the potato.

Saturday at Ronnie's was unbelievable.
I had never seen Weckl live before, and I was completely blown away. I just couldn't belive what I saw! How can he be so good?!
And when I'd gotten sort of used to it, they raised the level even more.
Now I'm a bit depressed though, because I don't think I'll ever get to see anything like that again!

...Just the way they played Funky Chicken!...arrgh...
